Which Format is Best?

The PDF is a digital version of the plans which is easiest for printing and viewing. It contains all the pages of the plans in one file, and shows colors and shadows. The PDF can be printed on any printer or paper size, but most of our plans print best on 36″ x 24″ paper.

The CAD files are best for making changes, and include .dwg and .layout formats. The .dwg files can be opened using AutoCAD or other CAD programs. The .layout files can be opened with Trimble Layout, and include a copy of the Sketchup 3D model, which can be opened in Sketchup Free.

What’s In A House Plan?

The Floor Plans are views of each floor, looking down from above. They show window and door locations, room dimensions, plumbing fixture locations, etc.

Exterior Elevations are flat views of the outside of the house, looking at the front, left, rear and right.

Building Sections show cutaway views of the home structure.

The Foundation Plan shows the location of footings and concrete slabs.

Floor & Roof Layouts show the outline of the floor truss systems, and slopes, valleys, ridges and hips on the roof.

The Wall Section is a detailed view showing how the walls are assembled.

The Electrical Plan shows the outlets, switches, lights and fans on the floor plan.

Construction Notes and typical Details.

What Else Might I Need?

Engineering. The plans do not include engineering for a specific state, or an engineer’s stamp.

Material List. We recommend having a local material supplier or lumber yard generate a material list for you.

Cost Estimate. The price to build a home varies by state and country. We recommend that you show the plan to 3 or 4 builders where you are planning to build, and get thumbnail pricing from them. This will allow you to connect with builders, and move forward with your project easier.
